There is a tremendous confusion regarding acupuncture. Many Loudoun County residents have avoided experiencing acupuncture out of fear. In the minds of most people acupuncture = needles and needles = pain. It is the purpose of this section of the Fink Family Wellness of Leesburg website to dispel misconceptions about acupuncture. Facts about acupuncture and the protocol utilized at Fink Family Wellness of Leesburg are spelled out in detail on this page
Acupuncture and Acupuncture Points
- Acupuncture is a health care system that has been used for 3000 years.
- Acupuncture was brought back to Europe by Marco Polo. It was introduced to America in 1971 when diplomatic relations with China were normalized.
- Acupuncture is a method of balancing the energy channels in the body. The energy is called Chi [Life energy] in Chinese medicine. These channels that carry Chi are called meridians.
- Acupuncture is a principle and not a technique. It involves stimulating specific acupuncture points on the body to achieve a desired result. That result might be pain relief, increased immunity, resolution of an organic health condition or producing a state of optimum wellness. The acupuncture points can be stimulated by needles or mild electric stimulating, pressure or cold laser.
Acupuncture Protocols
For many diverse health conditions, acupuncture is very effective. At Fink Family Wellness of Leesburg, we employ protocols developed by John Amaro, DC, Dip Ac.. Dr. Amaro has been practicing acupuncture since the 1970’s. In fact, he was third acupuncturist licensed in the United States. He has been in active practice for over 30 years. In addition, Dr. Amaro has made many trips to Asia to expand his knowledge in the field of acupuncture. Both Dr. Richard Fink and Dr. David Harrigan have been trained personally by Dr. Amaro. At Fink Family Wellness of Leesburg, we utilize the Amaro acupuncture protocols to achieve superior results for our patients. Meridian therapy is one approach to acupuncture used at Fink Family Wellness. It involves taking readings at the source points of the twelve meridians. These points are located at the wrists and feet. Readings are analyzed by computer software called Acugraph. This gives an accurate picture of the underlying health of the meridian system and how to bring it back into balance. The body achieves optimum health when the meridians are balanced. This is the perfect definition of wellness.
A special acupuncture procedure has been designed for the relief of sinus pressure and pain. It’s called SEAT [sinus electro acupoint therapy]. No needles are used. Mild electric current is applied to specific acupoints on the face. Relief is immediate in almost all cases. The procedure takes less than ten minutes.
Although this may change in the future, acupucture is not normally covered by major medical insurance policies.
